Figures show that CO2 figures were down 4.7% in the first half of 2010 to 145.2g/km, compared with the same period in 2009 and registrations of alternatively fuelled new cars doubled during this time.

Commenting on the increase in demand for greener vehicles, Lookers Managing Director, Andy Bruce, said: 'We have noticed a significant rise in demand for cars with lower CO2 emissions recently, which suggests both that the rise in fuel prices are forcing people to search for alternatively fuelled cars but also that people are becoming more environmentally conscious. Recent advances in technology and also concerns for the environment have meant that car manufacturers have been more creative with their ideas for new cars. Electric cars, hybrids and those run on biofuels give us an indication of the future of motoring.

Although not all the new eco-friendlier cars are run on alternative fuels and so therefore using a fuel other than petrol or diesel, some are designed to make more efficient use of these so they are still helping the environment. However, these solutions also help to reduce the amount the car owner spends on fuel.

The average CO2 figure has fallen each month of 2010 so far, however the aftermath of the Scrappage Incentive Scheme is expected to slow down this success.
